I finished The Screwtape Letters a week or two ago but I’m just now getting around to revisiting my notes on the matter. I wrote them in a journal I recently finished, so this blog kept escaping me. Here are further thoughts I wrote down about the remaining letters. See my previous entry for more information about the book by C.S. Lewis.
- Live in the present, it is the only moment close to eternity. The past is frozen, it does not flow, the future breeds feelings of fear, avarice and lust. If you always seek a future happiness, you will never be present for today’s happiness.
- Shopping around for churches, for the “right one”–the one that “suits you,” can cause you to be a critic where God wants you to be a pupil.
- The of oneself should also be the good of another. This is love.
- Satan doesn’t know love, he doesn’t believe in it, he believes it is impossible.
- The way in which women have been viewed, has changed dramatically. At diffwerent times, different sorts fo women have been “beautiful.” The eyes have been trained and are increasingly important in terms of sexuality. Will the eye’s/or have the eye’s demands become far reaching or impossible?
- We say, “my body,” but to whom or what do our bodies belong?
- “They will find out in the end, never fear, to whom their time, their souls and their body really belong.”
- Silence can be beautiful. Do not always surround yourself with noise.
- Believe in Christ, because He is true–not for any other reason (i.e. personal advancement/gain or “only such a faith can outlast the death of old cultures and the birth of new civilizations.”
- Marriage/relationships don’t succeed on love alone–charity is needed.
- Pray expecting an answer.
- Despair is a sin.
